RIGA - Several hundred teachers gathered on Tuesday in front of the Cabinet of Ministers to protest the low level of public funding for education.

Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis and Education Minister Ina Druviete came out to meet the protestors, who reacted by jeering and shouting.

Astrida Harbacevica, leader of the Latvian Teachers Union, demanded the government revise its timetable for raising teachers' salaries.

Under the approved timetable, teachers' salaries will be increased by 20 lats (28.5 euros) from Jan. 1, 2006. Teachers, however, are demanding that the salaries be raised by 60 lats from the beginning of 2006.
