State to decide on amendment for euro

TALLINN - Prime Minister Andrus Ansip said the Cabinet would soon decide whether an amendment to the Constitution would be necessary in order to adopt the euro.

The European Commission is insisting that Estonia amend Article 111 of the Constitution, according to which the Bank of Estonia has the sole right to issue Estonian currency.

In Ansip's opinion, an amendment was not necessary since the Estonian people voted in favor in the euro when they supported EU succession in September 2003.
