VILNIUS - Prime Minister Algirdas Brazauskas defended the forthcoming burial site for the radioactive waste of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, adding that Belarus' tit-for-tat proposal to build a huge pig farm on the banks of the Nemunas River was truly barbaric.

The panic over the burial site, which would not include long-life radioactive material, was unnecessary, Brazauskas said in a radio interview.

The Belarusian press has hinted that Belarus would build enormous pig farms, the largest in Europe, on the banks of Nemunas River if Lithuania proceeded with the fuel storage project.

"It would be barbaric, if anything of the kind was done," Brazauskas said of the pig farms.
