RIGA - Former Latvian foreign minister and EU commissioner Sandra Kalniete could be a potential candidate for the New Era Party in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, the Diena daily reported on Aug. 24.
The newspaper emphasized, however, that the news had yet to be confirmed. Meanwhlie, Kalniete has reportedly been attending New Era meetings in preparation for the next parliamentary elections.
Some have also speculated that Kalniete's role in New Era could be a transition toward her goal of running for Latvian president. The former foreign minister has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the presidency.
Others said that Kalniete's recent decision could be a result of the Foreign Ministry's failure to find an acceptable diplomatic position for her.
"I will have to think about my political future, but I have not made up my mind yet." Kalniete told the Baltic News Service.
