VILNIUS - Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko met his Georgian counterpart, Mikheil Saakashvili, on Aug. 12 in Borjomi to sign the Community for Democratic Choice initiative.
Meanwhile in the Baltic states, Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus praised the leaders' efforts to strengthen democracy.
"I have said on a number of occasions that cooperation among the Baltic and Black Sea countries is very promising. Therefore, I applaud the initiative of the leaders of the new democracies, Georgia and Ukraine, which I hope will become a strong incentive to eliminate the dividing lines in the region, resolve old conflicts, preventing human rights violations and creating possibilities for a new era of democracy, security, stability and enduring peace," Adamkus said in his address.
The president expressed hope that the future Community for Democratic Choice, seeking welfare for all the people of the region, would also promote further political and economic reforms in Ukraine and Georgia. He added that Lithuania actively supported and would continue to support these reforms.
