VILNIUS 's Law enforcement agencies have started looking into the history of Viktor Uspaskich's diploma.

The State Security Department may even pass misleading information about the diploma to the Prosecutor General's Office, Deputy Prosecutor General Gintaras Jasaitis told the Lietuvos Rytas daily.

Jasaitis said that the investigation would not be assigned to other institutions.

The investigation will begin with sending a request for legal assistance to the Prosecutor General's Office of Russia. "This will probably take some time," Jasaitis said.

Uspaskich used the diploma, from Moscow's Plekhanov University when entering the master's degree studies program at the Kaunas University of Technology.

The document may have been forged or even purchased.

Initial attempts to request information yielded inconclusive results.
