Gates' fund may donate $6 million to national library

RIGA 's The Bill and Melinda Gates may donate as much as $6 million to Latvia's National Library, a Culture Ministry spokesperson said.

Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis told Bill Gates about library project in March, after which the government prepared an informational report on the project. Last month Latvia received an invitation to qualify for funds as part of the Gates' international library support program.

The fund has invited a Latvian delegation to Seattle Aug. 11-12 prior to making a final decision on disbursing funds. Culture Minister Helena Demakova and National Library director Andris Vilks will attend.

Funds dispersed will be designated for the purchase of computer hardware and training of stuff.
