TALLINN - An event that's likely to raise a few eyebrows and scorch a few tongues, Estonia's very first chili cook-off, ChiliFest 2005, will be held on July 17 at the Lucca restaurant in Tabasalu, just outside Tallinn.

For non-American readers, chili is a fiery, stew-like concoction usually made from beef, chiles, onions and other spices and is thought to have sprung from the cowboy culture of the American southwest. Just about every American family has a secret chili recipe and friendly rivalry between neighbours has led to a tradition of chili cook-offs 's fun, fair-like events held in communities across the USA to decide who among the local amateur cooks (typically males with considerable beer bellies) is the chili-making champion.

The contest, which will be free of charge for entrants and eaters alike, marks the phenomenon's first foray into Estonia's culinary scene. It's a bold move considering that Estonians generally shy away from any spices stronger than salt and have been known to faint at the sight of a jalapeno. It should be noted however , that chili doesn't necessarily have to be extremely spicy, especially if there are no armed Texans around.

Whether Estonians will take to chili with the passion of their American counterparts is yet to be seen, but the serious creative forces that are backing it will no doubt boost the event. The cook-off is organized by the Gastronomy Society of Estonia together with award-winning chef Michael Bhoola of Pegasus and Lucca fame. Popular blues band Compromise Blue will provide musical support.

Bhoola will lead the small panel of judges made up of experienced American chili-eaters and Estonian celebs. Prizes will be given for "best chili" (judges' opinion and people's choices), "best vegetarian chili," "best presentation" and "hottest chili." In the last category, cooks will be required to eat a cup of their own creation.Would-be contestants have until June 15 to register. Each one must present at least 5 kilograms of chili, prepared either on or off site, and the chili must be served hot. The presentation takes place at 4 p.m. Contact [email protected] for entry details.

Those interested in trying the chili should simply turn up with an appetite at the Lucca restaurant, Keskpaeva 1, Tabasalu. The cook-off is expected to run from about 3 - 9 p.m.
