VILNIUS 's Efforts by Russian and Belarusian parliamentarians to convince attendants of a session of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Washington, D.C. to change the rules of election observation missions failed, Lithuanian delegates said.

Members of Lithuania's parliamentary delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly objected to changing the procedures.

"The Lithuanian delegation said there could be no doubt about current OSCE election standards and OSCE mission assessments," chairman of the Seimas delegation, Virginijus Domarkas, told a press conference on Friday.

"Certainly, Russia does not like the fact that the field of democracy is broadening and is extending to Central Asia," Conservative Audronis Azubalis added.
