VILNIUS -The second district court of Vilnius closed a case over the Respublika daily's publisher, who had been charged with running anti-Semitic articles in the newspaper.

Faina Kukliansky, the defender for the Jewish community, appealed to the court asking to impose the maximum punishment of 5,000 litas (1,449 euros) on publisher Vitas Tomkus and to seize his publications, as well as the tools used in the paper's production and distribution.

The lawyer based his appeal on the grounds that Tomkus had never apologized to the Jewish community and, not only had he allowed such articles to be published and distributed, but he was also the author.
