Vike-Freiberga wants new strategic goals for Latvia

After accession to the EU and NATO, Latvia needs to identify new goals and work out a new strategy that will rise above political squabbling and ensure national development, President Vaira Vike-Freiberga said Tuesday.

Addressing the Strategic Analysis Commission, she said that Latvia now had to know clearly what it wanted to achieve. "It is even more important to understand and evaluate the situation in which we are," said the president, calling on the country's "brightest minds" to join the process.

The Strategic Analysis Commission was organized last year as a way of bringing together the country's scientific potential to further national interests.
