Pabriks says border treaty's chances are 50:50

Foreign Minister Artis Pabriks sees the possibility to sign the border treaty with Russia on May as 50:50.

Concerns over signing the treaty arose after Russia said it would sign the treaty only after Latvia drops that declaration until Latvia drops a declaration it had attached to the treaty stating that the Baltic country was not linking the treaty with the broader issue of the illegal occupation of Latvia by the Soviet Union.

Pabriks said Latvia would continue explaining the declaration to Russia but noted "to explain something it is necessary that the other party has the wish to understand."

Pabriks said that he and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov agreed to continue preparing the treaty and hold consultations.
