Vilnius banker commits suicide

VILNIUS (BNS) - Algimantas Barusevicius, former chairman of the board at Lithuanian bank Lietuvos Valstybinis Komercinis Bankas was found dead in his Vilnius home on the afternoon of Oct. 22.

Barusevicius, 49, had shot himself in the heart with a sporting gun. In June, Barusevicius was sentenced to seven years in prison. He also had half of his property confiscated and was fined 13,000 litas ($3,250) for mishandling 300 million litas between 1994 and 1995.

The Vilnius Area Court on Oct. 19 rejected an appeal filed by Barusevicius who was soon to be arrested. During court hearings, Barusevicius said that he had made mistakes but had no intentions of harming the bank.
