Vike-Freiberga sends party bill to Parliament

RIGA - Legislation that would up the minimum membership to register a political party in Latvia five fold, passed last week, was returned to Parliament this week amid shouts of unconstitutionality from a ruling coalition party short on members.President Vaira Vike-Freiberga returned the bill, which broadly addresses public organizations, because of clauses that would require political parties to have 1,000 members to register, up from 200 required by current law.Bill sponsors claim it will help clean up Latvia's political image abroad by forcing some of the country's nearly 50 political pa...
