RIMI Latvija finished last year with a 5.5 million lat (8.2 million euro) loss even though sales had increased 28 percent to 109.2 million lats, the company has reported. Rimi Latvija executive director Christer Akerberg said the loss was due to significant investments needed to build the new Rimi distribution and logistics center in Riga. "For now we have reached what we expected and are working at full speed. Next year we plan much better results compared to last year," he said.

SAS-Denmark, the Danish unit of Scandinavian Airline System, has said it would launch a new route from Copenhagen to Palanga in early October, part of the airline's plans to add eight new European routes from the Danish capital. The air carrier has already opened talks with the relevant authorities for traffic authorization.

The planned merger of Scandinavian companies Kesko Food and ICA Baltic, designed as a joint venture between their Baltic supermarket chains Rimi, Citymarket and Supernetto, might be decided by the European Commission rather than national competition watchdogs. The Latvian Competition Council has reported that it was not considering the case and believed that the companies have to inform the commission about the planned merger. The new joint venture was initially expected to start operations this summer after completion of all formalities.

Lithuania's leading information technology group, Sonex Group, is demanding 1.2 million kroons (76,677 euros) from the Estonian IT company Baltic Computer Systems through the courts. Sonex last year held talks with BCS over the acquisition of the latter's subsidiary, BCS Infra, which still belongs to BCS. A preliminary hearing at the Tallinn City Court has been put off until Aug. 30.
