New Hook-Lift Vehicles Added to Military Vehicle Fleet

ew hook-lift vehicles are being added to the military vehicle fleet, which will enhance the logistical operations of units and increase their tactical readiness. Scania G360 and Scania G410 models are capable of handling various containers and cargo platforms using a hook-lift system.

"Hook-lift vehicles help ensure timely delivery of supplies during both peacetime and crisis situations, even in challenging terrains," said Erko Sepri, Strategic Category Manager (Vehicles, Machinery & Logistics) at the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI). "This procurement is part of the strategy to develop the military vehicle fleet, aimed at updating and enhancing our hauling capabilities. Ultimately, the Estonian Defence Forces will have top-level technology that meets their needs."

Scania G360 vehicles with 8x4 and 6x4 drivetrains are designed to fulfill transport and supply tasks. These vehicles are equipped with a hook-lift system that allows for quick and efficient handling of standard ISO containers and other cargo platforms.

Scania G410 vehicles with an 8x8 drivetrain are highly maneuverable and suitable for off-road driving. These trucks are built to withstand harsh conditions and can carry heavy loads, supporting units in combat situations.

According to Major Raigo Puusepp, the Chief Technician of the Defence Forces, the hook-lift system primarily allows for the rapid and effective use of various cargo handling tools across all units. "While container and pallet handling is usually associated with logistical support units, the main purpose of these vehicles is to supply new capabilities and existing indirect fire units. Thanks to the new vehicles, large quantities of heavy-caliber ammunition required by modern self-propelled howitzers can be handled quickly. It's also crucial for the rapid provisioning of new capabilities and for aligning the Defence Forces' logistics chain with civilian logistics chains," said Major Puusepp.

Over the next year, additional fleet vehicles arriving will include both logistical vehicles designed for road use and tactical vehicles that can also navigate off-road.

In addition to Scania Eesti, military vehicles will also be supplied by Veho Eesti and Volvo Defense. The total value of the military vehicle framework agreement is approximately 693 million euros, allowing the acquisition of vehicles not only for the Defence Forces but also for the National Guard, the Police and Border Guard Board, and subsidiary institutions of the Latvian Ministry of Defence.
