VILNIUS - Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda on Friday met teams preparing for the country’s presidency of the Council of the European Union and urged them to use the term to boost Lithuania’s international visibility.
The presidency is a strategic opportunity to strengthen Lithuania's influence in shaping European Union policy, the President's Office said. Nauseda emphasised that the entire country will preside over the Council, making it vital to involve local communities, municipalities, and cultural and scientific institutions.
"We must use this unique opportunity to spread the message of Europe in Lithuania and Lithuania in Europe, showcasing our state's innovations, culture, history and values," Nauseda said.
The president highlighted Lithuania's key priorities: strengthening European Union defence and security, support for Ukraine, European Union enlargement, increasing competitiveness, and addressing social and internal security issues.
More than 200 high-level events are planned to take place in the country during the first half of 2027, including an informal European Council meeting in Vilnius.
Nauseda also thanked civil servants and experts involved in the preparations for their work and contribution.
