National Alliance nominates incumbent ministers for work in new government

RIGA - The National Alliance at the board meeting on Monday decided to nominate Ilze Indriksone, Inara Murniece, Nauris Puntulis and Janis Vitenbergs for ministers in the new government, LETA learned from the party's spokeswoman Laima Melkina.

Former economics minister Vitenbergs will be nominated for the transport minister, while former agricultural minister Kaspars Gerhards will be the parliamentary secretary of the Transport Ministry.

The National Alliance nominated Murniece for the position of the defense minister. Murniece was the Saeima speaker during the 13th Saeima and has worked in the National Security Council and the Saeima national security committee.

Incumbent Economics Minister Indriksone has been nominated for the same position. Melkina said that Indriksone has started important jobs in relation to achieving energy independence from Russia and attracting investments, promoting business development.

Incumbent culture minister Puntulis also has been nominated for the same position. The politician has achieved funding for new, historically educating Latvian film making, Song and Dance Festival events, celebrating its 150th anniversary, increase of wages for state culture institutions, said Melkina.

Melkina said that the National Alliance will respect the call of prime minister's candidate Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) to nominate ministers who have run for the parliament elections and have won a seat at the parliament.

According to Karins' proposal, the National Alliance will be responsible for the economics, defense, culture and transport ministries.
