RIGA - Baiba Broka will be the National Alliance's candidate for Riga mayor at the next local elections, as the party's board agreed today.

Previously the National Alliance's Riga branch said it was considering two candidates: Broka and Saeima member Rihards Kols, but the latter withdrew his candidacy.

As reported, Broka headlined the list of candidates from the National Alliance ticket during the previous Riga City Council elections. She was elected to the Riga City Council, but the National Alliance remains in the opposition. Later, Broka was appointed justice minister in the Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) government but resigned after she was not granted access to classified information and returned to work in the Riga City Council.

The other ruling coalition parties have also revealed their candidates for Riga mayor: Unity has put forward MP Vilnis Kirsis and the Union of Greens and Farmers - chairman of the party's board Armands Krauze.

The next local elections in Latvia will take place at the beginning of June.
