RIGA - The murder of attorney Pavel Rebenok is a signal to the state of the need to pay more attention to public safety, the Minister of Justice Janis Bordans (New Conservative Party) told LETA.
Bordans said that in any murder case, the victims deserve a careful investigation from the state so that it could be solved.
In Rebenoks' case, the minister said that he does not know the circumstances and reasons for the murder, but he stressed that the state must do everything possible to ensure public safety. This means that the home affairs sector needs to be further reformed, and not just by absorbing additional funding.
"I hope that the home affairs bodies will be able to solve this crime. If there is no order within state structures, then the anti-social elements feel that the state is not in control. This must not be allowed. It is also important that the public does not become indifferent towards their law enforcement agencies," the minister said.
The minister also expressed satisfaction that the work of the Crime Prevention Council has intensified in the field of combating crime.
The minister also expressed his condolences to the relatives and friends of the deceased attorney.
