Everybody Knows / Todos lo saben(2019) – in cinemas from Friday, February 22
Everybody Knows (Spanish: Todos lo saben) is a 2018 Spanish-French-Italian psychological thriller film written and directed by Asghar Farhadi, and starring Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz. The film opened the 2018 Cannes Film Festival in competition.
The film follows Laura (Cruz) on her travels from Argentina to her small home town in Spain for her sister’s wedding, bringing her two children along for the occasion. Amid the joyful re-union and festivities, the eldest daughter is abducted. In the tense days that follow, various family and community tensions surface and deeply hidden secrets are revealed.
In true Hitchcockian fashion, Everybody Knows is an absorbing film filled with twists and turns and the mesmerizing ambiguity of a “who dunnit”. Everybody Knows stands out as Farhadi’s most interesting film to date as he explores the problems of privilege and need, the realities of resentment and tribalism and how they poison what appears to be a happy family. If this were a book, it would be described as a page-turner.
