RIGA - More than a thousand people marched through central Riga this afternoon to protest against the proposed transition to Latvian as the sole instruction language in all high schools, LETA observed.

The procession started with a rally at the Education and Science Ministry. Speakers at the rally said that the Education and Science Ministry had not discussed its initiative with partners and all the sides involved.

This time again, elderly residents make up the majority of protesters. Very few schoolchildren could be seen among the protesters.

The procession then proceeded to Raina Boulevard and on to Brivibas Boulevard to reach the Cabinet building.

As reported, Education and Science Minister Karlis Sadurskis (Unity) announced on October 6 that all general education subjects in high schools in Latvia will be taught only in the Latvian language in the 2020/2021 school year while children of ethnic minorities will continue learning their native language, literature and subjects related to culture and history in the respective minority language.
