More than 1,000 trees to be planted in Riga this year

RIGA - More than 1,000 trees will be planted along the streets of Riga this year, LETA learned from the Riga City Council's Communication Department.

The Riga City Council has started planting trees in various neighborhoods of the city this spring and will plant approximately 200 large trees along the streets of the city in the first half of the year.

Several hundred more trees will be planted in the second half of the year, and overall, more than 1,000 trees will be planted in Riga this year.

Lindens, ashes, yews, lilacs, larches, rowans, oaks, maples, poplars, ginkgos and ornamental apple trees will be planted in the city center and neighborhoods. Earlier in May, contract was signed with Labie Koki company on planting 98 trees and 15 bushes on the right bank of the Daugava, and 96 trees on the left bank.

Planting the trees started this week on Brivibas Street, where 33 lindens will be planted in total.

After the trees are planted, they are looked after for at least ten years, and specialists inspect the trees several times a year.
