Minister Juras Taminskas stated that Lithuania welcomes the European Commission’s initial proposal to increase investment in transport and military mobility in the European Union’s (EU) Eastern regions under the next multiannual EU financial framework. On Wednesday, in Vilnius, he held talks with Magda Kopczyńska, Director-General for Mobility and Transport at the European Commission (DG MOVE).

“Greater investment in our region’s transport infrastructure is crucial to make it stronger and more reliable for people. Projects such as Rail Baltica and other Lithuanian transport initiatives are key parts of Europe’s security architecture,” said Minister of Transport and Communications Juras Taminskas.

The Minister emphasised the need to further strengthen infrastructure security and resilience standards across the EU. Among Lithuania’s key priorities, he highlighted the European-gauge railway project Rail Baltica and the international motorway project Via Baltica. The meeting also touched on preparations for Lithuania’s 2027 Presidency of the EU Council.

Minister Taminskas also noted that the latest Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) progress report underlines the importance of developing the European rail network. The EU is expected to allocate investments to missing cross-border links, including Rail Baltica, with the aim of completing the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and ensuring faster and more sustainable connectivity.

The TEN-T network connects major EU cities with ports, airports, rail terminals and other key transport hubs.

In Lithuania, it covers the country’s main international road and rail links, the Port of Klaipėda, the Nemunas River route from Kaunas to Klaipėda, and the airports of Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga, along with other vital infrastructure.
