VILNIUS – Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite has warned the country is facing possible threat from "militant illiteracy and aggressive populism" in 2019.

In her traditional New Year congratulation message, the outgoing president said Lithuania is facing many challenges "on the international arena and domestically".

"There are many challenges ahead next year – on the international arena and domestically. But we will overcome them if we do not allow militant illiteracy and aggressive populism to prevail," Grybauskaite said.

"We will protect Lithuania, its independence, the rights and freedoms of our people. So let us stand strong and confident!" the president added.

Grybauskaite did not mention specific events or politicians in her message. Lithuania will hold presidential, municipal and European Parliament elections this year. Lithuanians will elect Grybauskaite's successor in May.
