VILNIUS - Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said one can only imagine how many generations the country and the world lost due to the Holocaust as he visited the Litvak Memorial Garden in the northwestern district of Plunge.

"Not many Holocaust survivors are alive today, and we can only imagine the scale of our loss and how many future generations we lost, because all of them could have contributed to the development of Lithuania and the world as a whole," he said.

Nauseda described the interactive memorial garden shaped as a map of Lithuania as a unique idea to commemorate the large Jewish communities that once lived in the country.

The president also called for a greater involvement of the Litvaks, Jews with roots in Lithuania, in the country's life.

The Nazis and their local collaborators killed over 90 percent of Lithuania's pre-war Jewish population of over 200,000 during the Holocaust.
