VILNIUS – Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda could call an early general election if the parliament passed a motion of no confidence in the government, Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte said on Thursday.

"There are different opinions; there is no secret here," she told reporters. "If the president is really encouraging it, there is another way – he can ask the government to call an early election, but before that, the Seimas has to express no confidence in it."

Simonyte's comment came after Nauseda said on Wednesday that an early general election was one of the few remaining ways out of Lithuania's current political crisis

"There will be opportunities to see how sincere some are in their opinion," she said.

Under the Constitution, the president may call an early election "upon the proposal of the government, if the Seimas expresses direct no confidence in the government".
