VILNIUS - The Seimas of Lithuania should convene an extraordinary session on Thursday, interim Social Democratic Party chair Mindaugas Sinkevicius has said.

During the session, MPs are expected to decide on Inga Ruginiene's candidacy for prime minister.

"The extraordinary session will be convened on the 21st (of August)," Sinkevicius told reporters on Sunday.

The need to convene an extraordinary session arose after former Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas resigned and the Social Democrats proposed Ruginiene as his replacement. President Gitanas Nauseda submitted Ruginiene’s nomination as prime minister to the Seimas last week.

If the new prime minister is confirmed by the Seimas, they will have no more than 15 days to submit to parliament a new cabinet of ministers and a government program agreed with the president. The program will also have to be approved by a vote.

"There will also be a meeting on the 26th (of August)," Sinkevicius said.

Facing mounting questions about his past and business ties, Paluckas resigned in early August as prime minister and the leader of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party.

The regular fall session of the Seimas will begin on September 10.
