Lithuanian parliament speaker backs free, democratic future for Belarus

VILNIUS - Lithuanian parliament speaker Juozas Olekas voiced support on Tuesday for a free and democratic future for neighbouring Belarus as the country marked the 35th anniversary of its declaration of independence.

"We sincerely believe that the day will come when the rule of law is restored in Belarus, when its people can choose their president and parliament in free and fair elections, and when Belarus becomes a full and respected member of the European family," Olekas said.

On August 25, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of Belarus granted constitutional status to the country's declaration of independence. Olekas said the anniversary was an opportunity to reaffirm "firm support for democratic forces, wishing them to maintain unity, closely coordinate their activities, and remain as close as possible to the people of Belarus."

The speaker added that Lithuania would continue to support the democratic aspirations of Belarusians and their desire to live in a free state governed by the rule of law.

Following the August 2020 presidential elections, in which Alexander Lukashenko claimed victory after more than two decades in power, mass protests erupted across the country. Authorities responded with a widespread crackdown.

Approximately 65,000 people were detained during the subsequent repression, while key opposition figures were either imprisoned or forced into exile. In response, Western nations imposed sanctions on the Belarusian government.
