VILNIUS – Lithuania is shifting to a new pay system of teachers as of the upcoming September.

The changes were on Friday backed by 71 lawmakers, three were against and three abstained.

The new rules will introduce an hourly pay for teachers' work, and teachers will paid for 1,512 working hours a year. The time will be divided into three parts, including classes, preparation for classes and communal work.

The Education and Science Ministry says the new rules will allow regulating teachers' workload and rewarding them for all work done for their school communities.

Part of teachers held protests in May against the planned changes, fearing that the reform would worsen their situation.
