Lithuanian, Romanian PMs discuss closer cooperation amid security threats

VILNIUS - Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius spoke by phone with Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan on Wednesday to discuss closer cooperation in the face of security challenges and hybrid threats, the government said.

 "Russia's war against Ukraine in our neighbourhood, hybrid attacks, and airspace incidents in the region and other European countries oblige us to focus on strengthening the security and resilience of us all – from the Baltic to the Black Sea, from Lithuania to Romania. To this end, it is necessary to use NATO and EU instruments, as well as to strengthen the partnership at the bilateral level," Sinkevicius said.

During the call, the leaders noted the importance of strengthening the air defences of NATO's eastern flank countries, implementing decisions taken at the recent Alliance summit in Ankara, and developing resilience to hybrid threats. They also highlighted the importance of maintaining and increasing pressure and sanctions on Russia.

Ahead of Lithuania's presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2027, the prime ministers discussed the country's priorities for the period.

Both leaders agreed that Romania and Lithuania are responsible for protecting the eastern border of the European Union and NATO, which must be taken into account when discussing the new European Union multiannual financial framework, with appropriate funding earmarked for protecting the alliance's eastern border.

Lithuania and Romania also see opportunities to develop cooperation in biotechnology, research and medical technology, as well as in implementing European Union-supported research and innovation projects.

According to Sinkevicius, Lithuania's internationally recognised biotechnology ecosystem could complement Romania's growing pharmaceutical industry.
