KAUNAS DISTRICT – The ruling Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union plans to also support candidates nominated by other political parties in single-member constituencies next year when a new parliament will be elected.

The party's position was endorsed by the LFGU council which held a meeting in Kaunas District on Friday.

"We will not merge lists with any party but, speaking of candidates in single member constituencies, we are considering cooperating," Ramunas Karbauskis, the LFGU leader, told journalists after the meeting.

In his words, no decisions on specific candidates have been made yet but the first candidates for single-member constituencies could be considered at the next council meeting.

Karbauskis believes the LFGU members who were elected to the incumbent Seimas should stand for reelection in single-member constituencies. „It would be strange to replace the people in single-member constituencies who also represented their voters. I believe our single-members work successfully and will be supported by people," he said.

Karbauskis did not disclose if he would seek reelection in his Silainiai single-member constituency.

The LFGU won 56 seats in the parliament in 2016.

Lithuania will elect a new Seimas in October, 2020.
