VILNIUS – Lithuania’s Social Security and Labor Ministry is finalizing an aid scheme for senior citizens, Social Security and Labor Minister Linas Kukuraitis said on Tuesday.
“An aid scheme for senior citizens is being drafted now. It is very comprehensive and diverse and we presented it to [social] partners yesterday and will discuss it at the government’s level in the near time,” he told the national radio LRT.
According to the minister, the government should on Wednesday consider a proposal to provide subsidies when employees over the age of 60 years and in the risk group are put on idle time in order to prevent them being laid off.
In addition to subsidies, the scheme also included recommendations for employers regarding the best ways to safeguard elder employees, to provide psychological and emotional support and other measures, Egle Samoskaite, the minister’s adviser, told BNS.
