VILNIUS – Lithuania's army has announced the completion of this year's conscription for mandatory initial military service.
The last 60 or so recruits started their nine-month service at the Lithuanian army's Grand Duke Algirdas Mechanized Infantry Battalion in Rukla, Jonava District, on Monday. They will now undergo a three-month basic soldier course. After that, the recruits will be classified based on their professions and will be trained to operate within the unit.
Later on, they will be eligible for professional military service or will be included in the Lithuanian Army Reserve and periodically called up to refresh their military skills.
The Lithuanian army told BNS it had recruited approximately 3,500 conscripts this year.
Next year's conscript list will be drawn up at the Ministry of National Defense in early January. A total of 3,800 people are expected to be called up for service.
