VILNIUS - Lithuania marks on Thursday the 300th birth anniversary of Elijah ben Solomon Zalman, the great 18th century Torah scholar known as the Gaon of Vilna.
The commemoration program includes a ceremony at the Lithuanian capital's Suderve Jewish Cemetery.
The Foreign Ministry said the event was to be attended by Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius, Faina Kukliansky, the chairwoman of the Lithuanian Jewish Community, and Yossef Levy, Israel's ambassador to Lithuania.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda is to have a telephone conversation with his Israeli counterpart, Reuven Rivlin, on the occasion of the Vilna Gaon's anniversary.
The Seimas has named 2020 as the Year of the Vilna Gaon and Lithuanian Jewish History.
