VILNIUS - Lithuanian border guards discovered another underground tunnel near the village of Latezeris in the Druskininkai municipality, suspected of being intended for illegal migration from Belarus, the State Border Guard Service said on Wednesday.

The tunnel was found after border guards, working with Polish border security specialists and using specialised equipment, inspected potential excavation sites. The underground passage was dug at a depth of around 1.5 metres beneath the physical border barrier and reinforced with logs and planks.

A pre-trial investigation into illegal border crossing has been launched. Following the necessary procedures, the tunnel was filled in.

This is the third tunnel discovered by Varena border guards in recent weeks along the border with Belarus. This year, the State Border Guard Service has recorded a total of 12 attempts to enter Lithuania by digging underground.
