VILNIUS – Safety should be first when developing latest technologies, Steven Wilson, the head of Europol's European Cybercrime Center, said in Vilnius on Tuesday. He expressed certitude that Lithuania could become one of the leaders in the field of fintech.

"If that becomes one of your key factors that becomes a selling point for Lithuania to say: we are the nation that is cyber secure by design. (...) For a small country, you've actually invested very well in relationship to cybercrime. I think there is a real understanding about potential threat, but also the potential benefit, so if law inforcement are integrated well with industry – that is where I think you can get the maximum benefit for the country. Take advantages but be secure," Wilson told journalists in Lithuania at the Forum of Financial Markets on Tuesday.

In his words, cyber security could become a key advantage in the country's efforts to take leadership in fintech and blockchain technologies, however, close cooperation between the market and the law-enforcement is crucial.
