VILNIUS - Lithuania and the European Union should consider designating Russian intelligence services as a terrorist organisation, Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys said on Friday.
According to Budrys, such a move would pave the way for stricter financial measures and other sanctions.
"This step can be taken by the EU, or by Lithuania individually. Lithuania individually recognised Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation. The EU later made a similar decision, because certain consequences follow from that," Budrys told reporters on Friday.
He noted that Lithuania's earlier decision to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation had served as a precedent for subsequent European Union-wide action.
Budrys added that a terrorist designation would represent more than a political signal, providing specific legal tools for financial oversight, sanctions and restrictions on contact.
