RIGA - As the society is ageing, it is necessary to strengthen lifelong learning opportunities for senior citizens in Latvia, President Edgars Rinkevics said at a meeting with representatives of the seniors' education organization Universities of the Third Age.

According to the president's aide Martins Dregeris, the parties discussed the role of senior schools in promoting an active and socially fulfilling life for seniors, as well as opportunities to expand access to learning and joint activities for seniors in different regions of Latvia.

The discussion highlighted the importance of strengthening lifelong learning opportunities as the society ages, and creating an environment where seniors can be active, share experiences and engage in community life.

The president noted that the number of senior citizens in the society is increasing, therefore, new ways should be found to strengthen the quality of life also in the later stages of life. In his view, senior schools are places where people can meet like-minded people and enrich their daily lives with new knowledge, experience and togetherness.

Rinkevics welcomed the progress made so far in the development of senior schools in Latvia and stressed the importance of further developing this initiative so that more and more seniors can get involved in learning, social activities and community life.

Senior schools, also known as Universities of the Third Age, operate in various regions of Latvia and offer educational and social activities for elderly people, promoting lifelong learning, social engagement and active participation in the society.
