Permanent conscription
Lithuania’s Defence Committee has decided to bring in permanent conscription. The council also decided on Monday to raise the recruitment numbers to 3,500 to 4,000 in 2016. This is an increase from the 3,000 recruited in 2015, and the other 3,000 recruits planned for 2016. Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Zukas, said the increased numbers would lead to the growth of the armed forces to 24,000 troops by 2021, in addition to 30,000 people in active reserve.
