Levits supports transition to Latvian as language of instruction at schools for integration of youth into society

RIGA - Transition to Latvian as the language of instruction at school is important for integration of youth into society, said Latvian President Egils Levits during his visit to Riga State Classical Gymnasium.

Representatives from the education sector informed the president on the progress in transition to Latvian as the language of instruction. Also school representatives shared opinions on the everyday problems at schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking about the transition to Latvian as the language of instruction at schools, Levits said that it is significant for full integration of youth in the society and the country's life.

The participants of the discussion also talked about improvement of the school network by 2027, education quality and contents reform, dynamic in development of presschools.

As reported, Saeima passed the amendments stipulating a gradual transition to Latvian as the sole language of instruction in Latvia's schools in March 2018. Under the amendments, teaching in Latvian will be phased in gradually from September 1, 2019 to September 1, 2021.
