Latvijas Banka's plans in the field of statistics until 2029 have been approved

Today, the Council of Latvijas Banka approved the Statistical Programme of Latvijas Banka for 2026 and outlined the plans for work in the field of statistics in the medium term (2027–2029).

The Statistical Programme of Latvijas Banka for 2026 aims to provide information on the key tasks of Latvijas Banka in the field of statistics in 2026, types of statistics collected by Latvijas Banka in pursuit of its tasks, the legal framework, frequency, and deadlines for compilation of these statistics, as well as information on the reporting agents and the main users of the respective statistical data. The programme also contains information on the statistics published by Latvijas Banka pursuant to the laws of the Republic of Latvia and to ensure continuity of publication of important time series or more user-friendly access to essential information published by the European Central Bank.

The major developments in the field of statistics in 2026 will be related to the introduction of new statistical data reporting requirements for insurers in line with the amendments to the European Union law, the start of publishing the statistical data on the 2nd and 3rd pension pillars on www.manapensija.lv, as well as to organising interviews with the households included in the sample for the sixth Household Finance and Consumption Survey in cooperation with the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia. Overall, the Statistical Programme of Latvijas Banka for 2026 includes 19 new tasks in the field of statistics.

The Medium-Term Statistical Work Programme of Latvijas Banka for 2027–2029 comprises 11 tasks, including the tasks of starting the collection of new statistical data from insurers and publishing the statistical data on direct investment in accordance with NACE Revision 2.1, as well as the task of starting the compilation and publishing of household wealth statistics.

Both Latvijas Banka's statistical programmes include only those supervisory statistics and statistics on resolution and compensation disbursement schemes that are compiled and published, along with the tasks related to these data.

According to Council Regulation (EC) No 2533/98 of 23 November 1998 concerning the collection of statistical information by the European Central Bank, the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) follows the principle of professional independence in the fulfilment of its tasks. One of the performance indicators for the above principle defined in the document "ESCB Public Commitment on European Statistics" is the publication of the statistical work programme.

Latvijas Banka carries out several tasks significant for the functioning of the economy and financial system. One of the most important tasks is the collection, storage, and processing of statistical data, as well as the development, compilation, analysis, and dissemination of statistical information pursuant to the Law on Latvijas Banka. Latvijas Banka compiles monetary and financial statistics, statistics on banknotes and coins, payment and payment systems statistics, external statistics, financial accounts statistics, statistics on resolution and compensation disbursement schemes, financial stability statistics, supervisory statistics, and other statistics necessary for ensuring the fulfilment of Latvijas Banka's tasks, as well as gets actively involved in the compilation of statistical data at the European level.
