RIGA - The State Police has opened a criminal process and ordered expert examinations in connection with the death of former Latvian national team basketball player Janis Timma, the State Police told LETA.

The criminal process has been initiated on the basis of a submission received by the police. The police are not commenting further in order not to affect the progress of the case.

Earlier this year, Timma's friend Mark Pugachev, who lives in the US, posted on social networks that the police had opened a case in regards to Timma's death, the portal la.lv, reported, noting that in his social networks Pugachev talked a lot about the responsibility of Timma's ex-girlfriend, Russian pop musician Anna Sedokova, in what had happened.

Timma was found dead in the stairwell of a building in Moscow on the night of December 17. Initially, the main version circulated was that he had ended his life by suicide.

Timma's remains were taken to Latvia, where a funeral was held on December 27.

Timma played 68 games for the Latvian national team.
