According to Latvian Defence Minister, Raimonds Bergmanis, Latvia is currently unable to afford conscription due to the large financial resources, plus the cost of infrastructure and training.
His comments were made on the morning of April 11, 2016, on Latvian national television.
Bergmanis said that a debate about resuming conscription was needed. However, firstly, he would like to see the implementation of earlier decisions about increasing the number of professional soldiers and home guards.
