RIGA - The State Security Service (VDD) has turned to the Prosecutor's Office to prosecute a Latvian convert to Islam for disseminating materials praising terrorism and calling for terrorism, LETA was informed by the service.
The criminal proceedings against the Latvian citizen, who converted to Islam, were opened on August 14 this year. The person came to the attention of the State Security Service because he shared videos praising the ideology of Islamist terrorist groups on the video-sharing platform TikTok.
In the course of its investigation, the VDD found that the person systematically and purposefully disseminated content praising terrorism and calling for terrorism.
The man came to law enforcement authorities' attention after his activities suggested that he might have become an adherent of radical interpretations of Islam, promoting violence as acceptable means for attaining ideological goals.
The convert expressed support for the Daesh terrorist group and willingness to engage in violent activities in the name of Islam. The person also showed increased interest in firearms.
On August 23, the State Security Service raided the convert's home and seized several data carriers.
The man was remanded in custody as a measure of precaution.
