RIGA - Speaker of the Saeima Edvardas Smiltens (Joint List, AS) on Saturday met with Hirofumi Nakasone, Chairman of the Japan-Latvia Parliamentary Association of the Upper House of the Japanese Parliament, and a delegation led by him and discussed ways to strengthen support for Ukraine, as well as economic cooperation between Latvia and Japan.
"The war in Ukraine is not just a matter of a military conflict between two countries. It is a question of the strength of international law," said the President of the Saeima, stressing that the world must help Ukraine win the war and ensure justice by holding the perpetrators accountable for the crimes they have committed.
Nakasone agreed with the position on Ukraine, stressing that Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine is shaking the world order. The President of the Japan-Latvia Parliamentary Association also highlighted the importance of helping Ukraine to rebuild its country.
Referring to the impact of the war on the economic development of the countries, Smiltens encouraged Latvia and Japan to seek new cooperation projects with high added value, so that the countries would be able to invest in their needs, including defense. The two sides also discussed cooperation in the field of energy, with particular emphasis on renewable energy resources, and focused on the possibilities for promoting dialogue on investment projects.
