RIGA - Latvian and Georgian nations stand for common European values, said Saeima speaker Edvards Smiltens (United List) during his meeting with the Georgian Ambassador to Latvia Irakli Kurashvili.

As the Saeima press service reported, the ambassador arrived for a welcome visit.

Smiltens voiced support to Georgia's eurointegration process, hoping for a successful reform process for Georgia to receive the status of an EU candidate country. The ambassador thanked Latvia for support and underscored the role of parliamentary cooperation and experience exchange in implementation of accession recommendations, including in gender equality and innovation matters.

"The negative impact of the pandemic and Russia's war in Ukraine cause a significant pressure on the national economy. Solutions should be found to balance revenue and expenditure, at the same time, renewing and expanding our economic cooperation," said Smiltens.

The parties agreed that the good transport connections between both countries help to ensure stable cooperation in the economy, including in tourism, also expanding trade between the countries. The parties agreed on the possibilities to promote cooperation in culture, education and science.

The ambassador commended activities of the Saeima group for cooperation with the Georgian parliament.
