VILNIUS - Lithuania will receive SENTINEL radars from Latvia free of charge to strengthen its NASAMS medium-range air defenSe systems, the DefenSe Ministry said on Thursday.

According to the ministry, Latvia uses alternative systems for its air defence needs and decided to transfer the radars following a proposal from the United States.

Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas thanked Latvia and the US for their cooperation in strengthening regional security. Kaunas said the SENTINEL radars would provide more precise detection and tracking of aerial targets, increasing the effectiveness of the NASAMS systems.

NASAMS is one of the most widely used medium-range air defence systems within NATO. Lithuania received its first system in 2020 and is currently in the second phase of its procurement program.
