RIGA - Latvia will donate 200,000 tons of mineral fertilizers of Russian origin to the Un World Food Program, LETA learned from the Foreign Ministry.

The ministry noted that Latvia in cooperation with the European Commission has responded to the UN request to reduce the negative consequences of the Russian war in Ukraine and help to solve the food crisis in African and Latin American countries.

Latvia has about 200,000 tons of mineral fertilizers that belong to companies sanctioned by the EU, accounting for a small share of Russia's global mineral fertilizer export.

The Cabinet of Ministers agreed to support donation of these cargos to the UN World Food Program.

The Foreign Ministry underscored that Latvia together with foreign partners and international organizations continue to provide support to countries who are suffering in crisis caused by Russian war in Ukraine. Food crisis, deficit of mineral fertilizers and energy price hike are consequences from the war.

Latvia condemns Russia's wish to use artificial mineral fertilizers deficit for its disinformation campaign, attempting to change attitude to Russia's war in Ukraine.
