Latvia's science universities have not improved significantly over year in World University Rankings

RIGA - None of the four Latvian universities of sciences has been ranked among the top 1,000 universities in the world, according to the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Riga Technical University (RTU) and the University of Latvia (LU) are ranked in the group 1001-1200, and Riga Stradins University (RSU) in the group 1201-1500. The Latvian University of Life Sciences and Technologies is the lowest ranked (1501+) of the four universities.

The ranking assesses universities' performance in five areas: learning environment, research environment, research quality, cooperation with industry and international cooperation.

The Latvian education institutions score highest in international cooperation, which reflects universities' ability to attract foreign students, international lecturers and researchers. In this category, RTU received 65.4 points, RSU - 64.6, the University of Latvia - 50.7, and the Latvian University of Life Sciences and Technologies - 27.8 points.

The lowest scores were received in the teaching and research environment. With the exception of the University of Latvia, no university scored more than 30 points in these categories. The research environment of the University of Latvia scored 31.3 points, while the learning environment scored 20.5 points.

The Latvian universities have mostly improved their performance somewhat over the year. RSU showed the biggest improvement in the research quality category, where the score rose from 31 to 39.1.

This year's ranking includes a total of 2,091 universities worldwide. Oxford University is the highest-ranked university overall, with Massachusetts Institute of Technology in second place and Princeton University and the University of Cambridge sharing third place.

Among the Baltic universities, the University of Tartu is the best-performing, ranked 301st-350th.
